Coding laptop or gaming laptop for college? Make the GPU justify the tradeoff
Use your software, games and carrying routine to choose a laptop category before comparing brands and graphics badges.

Separate a requirement from a possibility
I may try gaming and my course requires a particular graphics application are different reasons to buy a laptop. Write them in separate columns. Put named software and named games in the first column only when you know you will use them. Put uncertain future interests in the second. This makes the cost of buying for possibilities visible.
Official software requirements should lead the decision. The VS Code and Android Studio documentation show why development is not one uniform workload: the editor itself and an emulator setup have different needs. A coding label alone does not justify a gaming machine, but neither does it prove that a basic configuration will be sufficient for your course.
Compare two ownership plans
Build one shortlist for the least expensive configuration that meets your confirmed work, and another that also meets your gaming or graphics objective. Compare complete model codes. Include the charger in your carrying assessment and the accessories needed to use each laptop at your desk. Do not assume that every gaming laptop is heavy, every productivity model is quiet or every dedicated GPU is fast enough; those are properties to verify for the actual machine.

Price the optional part honestly
Subtract the cost of the sufficient work configuration from the gaming configuration. That difference is what you are choosing to spend on the additional capability. Compare it with how often you expect to use that capability and what else the money would otherwise buy. There is no universal correct number, but there is a useful distinction between a deliberate leisure purchase and describing every upgrade as necessary for college.
A graphics badge cannot tell you how a machine performs after an extended session. Cooling, power settings and configuration matter. Look for sustained tests of the exact version and pay attention to the conditions. We have not benchmarked the models in this guide, so we will not give a frame-rate promise or a battery-life ranking.
When the less specialised laptop is the better fit
For note-taking, ordinary programming, browser work and travel, start by checking whether a productivity configuration meets all confirmed requirements. If it does, a screen and keyboard you like, adequate memory and service coverage can be more useful than extra graphics capability. This is a preference order, not a claim that all non-gaming laptops are superior for students.
Lenovo's India education pages provide IdeaPad and LOQ/Legion families as examples of the categories to investigate. They do not identify one exact configuration as right for your course. Match the model code, seller and current offer before buying.
A decision you can explain in one sentence
Finish with: I am buying this configuration because it runs these required applications, supports this optional activity, and fits this daily routine. If you cannot fill in those blanks without vague future-proofing, narrow the purchase again. Buyers who need certified professional hardware or an unusual operating system should follow those requirements directly. Buyers with occasional gaming interest should avoid paying a large premium until they know which experience they actually want.
